Mississippi Furls Its Divisive Flag

A flag is a symbol meant to unite a diverse group of people. The flag of Mississippi—the last state banner to incorporate the Confederate battle emblem—no longer does so. Particularly for Mississippi’s black population, it is a symbol of oppression, a reminder of a time when their ancestors were denied the rights promised to all by America’s founding ideals.
